SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. – A task force lands in a dangerous and potentially threatening environment. Their immediate objective is to establish security. Each post is manned with a continuous cycle of armed Security Forces personnel who may work between 16 to 24 hour shifts to provide protection and defense at the new location.

While this isn’t the current norm, the 4th Security Forces Squadron leaders are training Airmen outside of their career field to execute mobile missions using improved methods. “When members land, the idea is to get them into a work/rest cycle,” said Staff Sgt. Patrick Mcgee, 4th Security Forces Squadron Training NCO in charge. “We’re fast on the ground and fast getting security set-up. Once we make sure everything is good, augmentees can take over.” Mcgee added the goal is to give SFS Airmen adequate rest before returning to their positions.

Under the multifunctional construct, weapons loaders could drive refueling trucks, defenders could refuel a jet and avionics specialists could provide airfield security while also performing their primary duties. The training supports the National Defense Strategy priorities to evolve innovative operational concepts and enhance lethality in contested environments. If fielded, these Combat Support Wings could give the ability to rapidly deploy in smaller, more efficient and agile teams to austere and potentially contested areas.

“Going into the training, I wasn’t sure what to actually expect,” said Staff Sgt. Angela Lawrence, 4th Operations Support Squadron airfield management operations NCOIC. “However, the training team was phenomenal. I feel more prepared for a real-life scenario and it was really eye-opening to be involved in a proficiency training that Security Forces does annually.”

Exposure to tasks outside their specialty code expands their skillset and generates new-found respect between different squadrons. The 4th Fighter Wing continues to test this innovative warfighting concept that could be a game-changer for future adaptive-basing constructs. “We’ve got maintainers, medical personnel, crew chiefs and a little bit of everybody out here,” Mcgee stated. “We’re hitting all the edges of the iceberg to give them enough awareness to augment. They’re not doing it full time, but they will have what they need should they be called to step up and assist in a real-world situation.”
