PORT HADLOCK, Wash.— Commander, Navy Installations Command has selected Naval Magazine Indian Island as the recipient of the 2020 Installation Excellence Award in the small installation category.
This annual award recognizes large and small installations for their outstanding performance during the prior year that was consistent with enterprise strategic goals and Secretary of Defense criteria.
“Congratulations to NAVMAG Indian Island for winning first place in the small category for the CNIC Installation Excellence Award,” said Commander, Navy Region Northwest Rear Adm. Scott Gray. “Additionally, this is the fourth installation excellence award for NRNW in the last 6 years, a true team effort. Great job!”
Naval Magazine Indian Island received top marks for how well the team achieved objectives in several areas of installation management, including mission support, energy conservation, quality of life and unit morale, environmental stewardship, real property management, safety, health and security, and communications and public relations.
“I was beyond excited to learn we had won this award,” said Naval Magazine Indian Island Commanding Officer Cmdr. Don Emerson. “I am lucky enough to work with Indian Island’s phenomenal team of Sailors, civilians and contractors and they all deserve to be recognized for the outstanding work they continue to do to support the Fleet every day.”
Indian Island set itself apart from other small installations for its award-winning workplace safety and environmental programs.
“We also make sure our adherence to excellence carries over into all aspects of what we do, such as during operations at the ammunition pier, being good stewards of the environment or reaching out to those in the communities surrounding us,” Emerson said.
The installation was the recipient of the Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award for small installations in 2018 and was recently re-certified as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program “Star” Site.
Indian Island received the Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Gold Award in 2019 and the SECNAV Environmental Award for Sustainability in the non-industrial installation category for eight consecutive years in recognition of the installation’s sustained superior performance in the areas of energy efficiency, energy management, energy awareness, and energy project execution.
“This is the result of a skilled, cohesive team doing an outstanding job day in and day out,” Emerson said. “They always rise up to every job, regardless of challenges or deadlines, and they accomplish those tasks so we can support the Navy’s larger national defense mission.”
Naval Magazine Indian Island is the U.S. Navy’s only deep-water ammunition port on the West Coast. The installation supports the Navy’s national defense mission by providing conventional ordnance support to vessels ranging from destroyers to submarines and aircraft carriers while emphasizing safety, accuracy and efficiency.
