ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. – The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club has a history of prestigious noncommissioned officers that are always ready to lead by example. They demonstrate excellence as extremely knowledgeable and professional Soldiers.
Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Garrison, senior enlisted medical adviser, U.S. Army Sustainment Command, and Sgt. 1st Class Charles Miller, First U.S. Army, were inducted into the RIA SAMC chapter Jan. 16 in Heritage Hall.
“The SAMC is a non-profit organization committed to contributing to the community,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Marco Torres, ASC, during his ceremony remarks.
Those selected to join the organization are judged based on demonstrated leadership, professionalism, and overall general military knowledge. The club is named after Sgt. Audie Leon Murphy, America’s most decorated World War II Soldier.
Soldiers who are recommended for SAMC have many different reasons for rising to the challenge. Garrison shared his motivation for this goal in a tribute to his father, Patrick Davidson.
“In 2003, I was in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division,” Garrison said. “I spent every day going out on mission to patrol my sector and looking for a fight. Every day was spent patrolling, cleaning weapons, inventorying aid-bags and training on my skills.”
“I got frustrated with the lack of engagement with the enemy,” he said.
After receiving comical advice from fellow Soldiers, Garrison said he then called his father.
“He said, ‘Jeremy most of your job will always be about being ready. You are supposed to be prepared. Focus on being ready.”’
“He gave me advice that had a profound impact on me and has stuck with me ever since,” Garrison said.
Army leadership often cites at ceremonies the positive impact of a Soldiers family.
“It has been said, the strength of our nation is our Army, the strength of our Army is our Soldiers and the strength of our Soldiers is our families,” Torres said.
