Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC) is pleased to honor Expeditionary Engineering Director Mr. Cody M. Reese, P.E., as the 2020 NAVFAC EXWC Civilian Engineer of the Year for his outstanding technical achievements and significant contributions to the NAVFAC EXWC engineering community.

“Cody is a rare blend of intellect, problem-solving skills and leadership, making him the right choice for this prestigious award,” said Lee Bond, supervisor and deputy department head. “As director of the expeditionary engineering division, his charismatic leadership allows the skilled professional engineers working under his charge to produce results at the highest levels. His efforts combined with those of the many other leaders, professional engineers and scientists here enables our command to meet the mission of delivering specialized facilities and expeditionary solutions to Navy warfighters.”

From intern to EXWC’s expeditionary engineering director, Reese’s tenure with the Department of Defense is a testament to hard work and dedication as a practitioner of public service. As Reese’s accountability grew, so did his achievements, where most recently he successfully initiated a highly visible DOD project—the Resilient Expeditionary Agile Littoral Logistics Joint Capabilities Technology Demonstration.

Simultaneously, Reese emerged as the Expeditionary Programs’ technical leader, where he has worked to forward deploy new expeditionary capabilities, all while spearheading the integration of all NAVFAC efforts across four strategic initiatives. These initiatives include the development of a site-specific information system that uses 3D virtual imagine technology, advanced airfield and pier repair capabilities, advanced mobile logistics capabilities, and deployable additive manufacturing systems.

"It is an extraordinary honor and a great surprise to receive the 2020 EXWC Civilian Engineer of the Year award,” said Reese. “I am continually amazed at the breadth, complexity, and creativity embodied in the work we do at EXWC, and it keeps me excited to come to work.”
Reese added, “The efforts I was recognized for are command-wide team initiatives, and represent the spirit of innovation and culture of collaboration at EXWC.”

Beyond his technical achievements, Reese has made significant strides in developing the EXWC engineering workforce, as he initiated a command-wide systems engineering graduate certificate program in 2018. The program is designed to enhance the technical competency and collaborative team-building relationships across the command. Reese has also led multiple organizational initiatives throughout his public service career, and coordinated strategic investments in both facilities, equipment, and tools.

Reese holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California Berkeley, a Master of Science in Systems Engineering Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, and is currently working towards his Doctorate of Philosophy in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
