CRANE, Ind. – Crane Army Ammunition Activity strives to equip its workforce with the tools it needs to work safely no matter what. This goes double for the employees operating in remote locations. Not only is safety the top priority at Crane Army, but keeping its people safe also ensures munitions are able to get to the warfighter on time, every time. One example is that CAAA provides CPR training, like the one offered in October and November of 2019.
The CPR course is offered to all employees regardless of occupational need.
CAAA Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Greg Tyree said that the program, which boasts nine certified instructors from different parts of the CAAA workforce, aims to give Crane Army employees another way to maintain personal safety.
“CAAA is putting time and resources into their future,” Tyree said. “It’s just another way we can protect our people and help each other.”
The program started in 2013 to train employees whose positions require CPR certification. In 2017 it was expanded to include middle and upper level leadership and anyone who would be working in remote locations on the 100-square mile base.
Tyree said the training keeps CAAA employees safe during the work day, but is also intended to provide support on off-duty hours as well.
“What we really hoped was that they could be an asset not just at CAAA, but to their families and communities,” Tyree said.
Storage Specialist Allison Luongo agrees that the course is a useful tool and planned to enroll in the training course after she used CPR to revive her father who had a heart attack over Thanksgiving weekend. Luongo had been trained in CPR 15 years ago, but has not received training since. She was able to perform CPR by following the directions of a 911 emergency responder on the phone.
“That class would have been very helpful,” Luongo said. “It would have made me feel like I wasn’t going to let my dad die because I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m definitely signing up for that class.”
Emergency Management and Plans Officer Jess Kirkendall said giving employees confidence in their ability to save lives was the vision behind the course.
“I want people to feel comfortable and confident in their knowledge and technique, that if something really bad happens they can be there and jump in to help and not be paralyzed by the fear that by doing something that will make things worse,” Kirkendall said.
Crane Army Ammunition Activity produces and provides conventional munitions in support of U.S. Army and Joint Force readiness. It is part of the Joint Munitions Command and the U.S. Army Materiel Command, which include arsenals, depots, activities and ammunition plants. Established Oct. 1977, it is located on Naval Support Activity Crane.
