BOSTON – Navy Aviation Electrician's Mate (AE) Sailors maintain electrical and navigational systems in aircraft while training for computer systems that provide support. The rate requires attention to detail, research, and preparation. These are all the same traits AE1 Michael Campeau says he brings to his recruiting efforts.

Champeau, a Sturbridge, MA native, joined Navy as a sense of service. His first duty station in 2011 was attached to the Spartans at Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70 in Jacksonville. FL. There he followed the command's philosophy built upon a people, pride, and professionalism. When he arrived at Navy District New England March 3, 2016, that ingrained vision to helped him see what was needed to succeed.

"I came to recruiting to help young people like myself," said Champeau. "If I can help change or impact someone's life for the better, like the way the Navy has impacted me, my time recreating will be worth it."

Champeau's accomplishments on board NRD New England have been impressive. Holding the Leading Petty Officer position at Navy Recruiting Station, Worchester, earning recruiter of the year in 2017, Meritorious Advancement to first-class in 2018, and his most recent accolade of reaching the Centurion award for netting 100 contracts in less than 36 months in 2019. This pattern of success has left his recruiting tour one to emulate.

"I didn't have a real goal other than I would learn everything I could about my schools and plan to write as many contracts as I could each month," said Champeau

AE1 said he would expect to reach 3.0 average contracts each month, believing that the goal would keep him on target. The results have proven prosperous with over 140 cumulative contracts going into 2020.

"It is being mission-driven and consistent," said Champeau. Those who sit around complaining about what they don't like are not going to succeed. Every person is different, but the winners are the ones who go out and handle it, and get the job done regardless,"

Opportunity to gain access to venues where he could recruit provided some challenges that sometimes required more finesse.

"I would educate myself on things like what was the average cost of a typical four-year school in the area, and combat that with the GI Bill, NCPACE, Tuition assistance," said Champeau. "Just being knowledgeable, and comparing the benefits to their civilian counterparts helped break down that disconnect about the military."

Some days on the job still proved to be more emotionally challenging when working in areas less welcoming to the military.

"Being understanding, making sure I remain calm even when faced with negative comments," said Champeau. "It is not easy, but I always counter any misunderstanding or negativity by remembering my Navy Core Values and displaying myself with a high level of professionalism."

He summed up his recruiting philosophy saying it comes down two things.

"Numbers and the time you are willing to put in," said Champeau."In Worchester, our motto is winners win, so let's go out and win."

Chapeau continues his service to the military community not only on the job but during his off time. He has served four years and holds the position of Vice Commander in his home town American Legion Post 109. He expects to continue his duty in New England until returning to HSM 70 in March 2020.

"Hopefully, I will pick up chief in August then apply for CDO and LDO as I continue my career in the United States Navy."
