Rangers from the Waurika Lake Project Office delivered the Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ water safety message to several thousand people during the Oklahoma City RV and Boat Show at the Oklahoma National Fairgrounds, Jan. 10-12.

Ranger Destany Rochell of the Waurika Lake Office and Luke Prichard, the Waurika Lake Manager, met with boat show attendees and talked to them about water safety and handed out water safety trinkets to children and adults.

“We’re out here helping to spread the message about water safety,” said Rochell during the Friday afternoon shift. “We hope people will listen to the message and stay safe.”

The Waurika Lake Office provided all of the staffing for the water safety booth at this year’s boat show.

The winter months provide a good opportunity to conduct water safety outreach as most parks and campgrounds are closed and colder temperatures mean that attendance at open parks is significantly reduced.

Prichard estimated the lake office recorded more than 2000 water safety interactions during the three-day event.

“The boat show is a good opportunity for us to perform water safety outreach to the public and interact with a large crowd in a relatively small area,” said Prichard. “It was nonstop Saturday and Sunday; we gave away all of our water safety items by Sunday.”

The Tulsa District manages a robust water safety education program and encourages members of the public to wear appropriate water safety gear during activities in and around the water. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the number one provider of water-based recreation in the United States.
