NAVFAC EXWC Scientist Hosts ‘TED Talk’ to Promote Women in STEM Careers

Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC) environmental engineer Tami Relph hosted a ‘TED Talk’, discussing the overlooked link between national security and the environment, and to promote women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

Held locally, the TED (technology, entertainment, design) Talk event was independently organized. TED, a nonprofit devoted to sharing valuable ideas through the discussion forum known as ‘TED Talks’, focuses on broadening horizons, spreading ideas, stirring curiosity, exploring possibilities, shifting perspective, and discovering potential.

Relph, a professional environmental engineer, was selected out of hundreds of applicants to participate in the most recent recordings of TEDx Talks (the ‘x’ indicates independently organized) from the Santa Barbara chapter. After six months of drafting, finalizing, coaching, and performing, Relph took the stage this past November in front of hundreds of guests. The live, 14-minute forum took place at the New Vic Theater in Santa Barbara, Cailf.

"My experience working with TEDx was incredible," said Relph. "As an engineer, I enjoyed the challenge of speaking to such a wide audience and sharing my ideas. I had the privilege to provide a new perspective on environmental security as it relates to the Department of Defense. Even more so, speaking on TEDx also offered the setting to discuss why engineers should be on TEDx."

Relph’s TED Talk, and those alike, are developed to inspire a new generation of women to follow Relph’s lead and change the gender ratio in STEM careers.
“EXWC is a fascinating organization to work at; our diversity of professional people and talent is awe-inspiring,” said Jennie Dummer, department head for EXWC Environmental Security business line. “Tami is a leading example of this diversity and clearly represents the ethos expected of all federal employees.”
