U.S. Navy Story by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Amy Taylor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior leaders of Navy Region Southeast Reserve Component Command Jacksonville (NRSE RCC JAX) attended the commissioning ceremony of Navy Recruit Division 009, the command's first sponsored division of Navy recruits, at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, Illinois October 17, 2019.

NRSE RCC JAX Commanding Officer, Capt. Dale Maxey, along with Command Master Chief Charles Morrow and Public Affairs Officer, Cmdr. Kevin Jane took this opportunity to honor the Navy’s birthday by mentoring future Sailors.

“I felt it was important for us to welcome Division 009 not just into the military service but into the Naval profession that has a lineage that extends 244 years,” said Maxey.

The RCC team spoke to the new recruits who just finished their first processing days of boot camp and presented them with a command flag to display while marching and during graduation.

“Being able to stand in front of them and let them know that I once stood where they are, reminds them that bootcamp is just a start of something that will catapult them to success, whether they choose to stay in the Navy or not, either way serves as a reminder that they are the future,” said Morrow.

Division 009 residing in “Ship 6, USS Constitution” aboard the installation will have plenty of motivation over the next eight weeks according to Morrow.

“Sponsoring a bootcamp company is an investment in our future and that is why it is important for our command to be an inspiration for new recruits,” said Morrow, “acknowledging the fact that they chose to serve our country makes them feel appreciated during a time when they won’t be able to do anything right.”

Recruit divisions being sponsored and visited by Sailors with experience in the fleet can have great benefits according to Chief Engineman Terrence Powell, recruit division commander, Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Ill.

“It builds motivation and has a positive impact on recruits going through boot camp,” said Powell.

NRSE RCC JAX members will return in November for a few more visits with their division to answer more questions and share experiences prior to their graduation and welcome them to the fleet.

In a birthday message to the fleet, Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday said, “Sailors and Marines stand watch together in every fleet and operate as an integrated naval force. We operate jointly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and continually demonstrate America's ability to put forces wherever and whenever we choose. There is no higher honor than to serve with each one of you.”
