Today marks the anniversary that 33 Soldiers from the 109th Field Artillery were lost in a train accident on the way to the mobilization station on September 11, 1950.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 109th Field Artillery, recognized those Soldiers that died in service to their country during an annual memorial ceremony at the Kingston Armory, Pa., on September 7, 2019.
“For over two hundred years, our regiment has served this nation, our state, and our valley,” Maj. Bret Stemrich, 109th Field Artillery, and narrator for the ceremony. “In time of disaster and in time of war, the regiment has been fortunate to have had the selfless service of its soldiers; Soldiers in a continuous and unbroken line from Colonel Butler’s 24th Connecticut to today’s 109th Field Artillery.”
The ceremony honored those Soldiers that gave the ultimate sacrifice across the 244 years of the 109th’s illustrious history: from its creation on October 17, 1775 as the 24th regiment, Connecticut militia, to its time with the 55th Brigade and the 28th Infantry Division; the Soldiers of the 109th have continued to serve with professionalism and pride.
The memorial paid special tribute to those 33 Soldiers that died in a train accident on September 11, 1950 who had been mobilized for the Korean War. The battalion had been en route to a mobilization station at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, when the troop train had stopped for repairs; a civilian passenger train missed the warning devices placed out by the train’s crew and crashed into the stalled troop transport.
