U.S. Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command

Lt. Gen. David G. Bellon, commander of Marine Corps Forces Reserve, visited Lasswell Hall Dec. 20, 2019, to meet the people behind Marine Corps cyberspace operations.

Lasswell Hall, a modern four-story building, located within the National Security Agency’s campus in Fort Meade, Maryland, is home to Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command headquarters. Bellon’s tour of MARFORCYBER included discussions of cyberspace capabilities and operations. He met with the Marines, both active-duty and reservists, who operate the Marine Corps’ cyberspace weapon systems.

The visit started with a brief from Maj. Gen. Matthew G. Glavy, MARFORCYBER and Joint Task Force Ares commander. Glavy explained the key infrastructure and cyberspace capabilities based out of Lasswell Hall, followed by a brief on current and future defensive and offensive cyberspace operations.

“The people of MARFORCYBER are the key component to this command and the reason we are successful,” said Glavy.

Glavy’s leadership philosophy can be summarized as “People, ideas, things … in that order.” It’s on the wall as you walk into Lasswell Hall and it is a mantra repeated every day within the command. MARFORCYBER’s commander prioritizes people because he believes without the right motivated, trained and empowered people, the mission would not be accomplished.

More than 100 people, from junior Marines throughout the command to Brig. Gen. Leonard F. Anderson, Deputy Commander for JTF-Ares, are Marine reservists serving as critical enablers to MARFORCYBER’s mission. Bellon met with a small group of Marine reservists and discussed future changes and opportunities for reserve forces. They also discussed current and future models for talent management.

“We have to be comfortable with moving forward, it’s a fight for talent,” said Bellon. He referenced the Commandant’s Planning Guidance on several occasions highlighting talent management as not only a priority of his but a priority of the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Bellon stressed the importance of the inactive ready reserve and that those Marines that have the “irrational call to serve,” should have some incentive to stay in the Marine Corps.

MARFORCYBER conducts full-spectrum cyberspace operations, to include operating and defending the Marine Corps Enterprise Network, conducting defensive cyberspace operations within the MCEN and joint force networks, and when directed, conducting offensive cyberspace operations in support of joint and coalition forces.
