Navy Medicine West (NMW) announced the region’s active duty and Reserve Senior Sailors of the Year for fiscal year 2019.
Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (HM1) Raymond Pomida, from Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), was named the region’s 2019 Sailor of the Year and HM1 Jeff Bruderer, from Operational Health Support Unit (OHSU) Bremerton, was named the 2019 Reserve Sailor of the Year. They were selected from among 15 Sailors, each representing commands throughout the region.
“The Sailors of the Year were selected from a very diverse set of Sailors, all of whom have demonstrated that truly the best and brightest are working in Navy Medicine West,” said NMW Command Master Chief Loren Rucker. “These outstanding Sailors are proving that technical expertise, deckplate leadership, and a culture of excellence are pervasive throughout Navy Medicine. I am proud of these great Sailors and the work they do every day.”
After the top two Sailors were selected, Rear Adm. Tim Weber, NMW commander and director of the Navy’s Medical Service Corps, announced their names during NMW’s annual board of governor’s meeting, a gathering of all the region’s commanding officers and command master chiefs.
During the past twelve months, Pomida, the region’s active duty Sailor of the Year and a native of Samar, Philippines, has served as the leading petty officer for NMCSD’s critical care nursing department and medical surgical nursing department, managing a total of 190 enlisted Sailors who supported nearly 150 nurse corps officers and more than 60 support staff across several inpatient divisions.
“Our Sailor of the Year represents the best of the best,” said NMCSD Command Master Chief PatrickPaul Mangaran. “It is humbling to see what our future leaders bring to today’s Navy.”
Pomida also contributed to his shipmates’ professional growth and the command mission by serving as a member of the command resilience team, supervising 11 assistant command fitness leaders, co-chairing the command’s Sailor 360 Olympics, and serving as the Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor representative for the directorate for nursing services.
"HM1 Pomida is an outstanding Sailor who exhibits the traits of an effective Navy leader by serving with integrity and selflessness" said Capt. Bradford Smith, commanding officer at Naval Medical Center San Diego. "His support of the command, his commitment to serving his community through volunteerism, and his tireless mentorship of junior Sailors are just a few of the reasons that HM1 Pomida is truly an exemplary Sailor and fully deserving of being recognized as Navy Medicine West's Sailor of the year. I couldn't be more proud of him."
When asked what it meant to be selected as the region’s 2019 Sailor of the Year, Pomida simply said, “I would like to stay the course and offer the same three words that have served as my guiding principles in my Navy career—Ship, Shipmate, Self.”
Bruderer, a U.S. Navy Reservist from Salt Lake City, Utah, is OHSU Bremerton Detachment K’s leading petty officer and the first line of leadership for 32 enlisted Sailors, which includes managing three work center supervisors and coordinating the medical and dental care of more than 450 Sailors attached to Navy Operational Support Center Salt Lake City.
Among his duties as a reservist, Bruderer serves as a tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) instructor for Navy Medicine, teaching courses at commands throughout the United States and overseas locations. In the past year, he’s taught 10 courses at 16 different commands around the globe, resulting in the certification of 270 personnel.
“HM1 Bruderer is a top-notch Sailor,” said Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Brad Jewett, senior enlisted leader at OHSU Bremerton. “He has demonstrated himself to be a subject matter expert in trauma training and passionate about teaching Sailors. As a civilian firefighter and paramedic, he brings current, relevant, real-world training and skills to the reserve force.”
Bruderer, who is currently at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan for his two weeks of annual training said he was honored to be selected as the NMW 2019 Reserve Sailor of the Year.
“Being selected for Sailor of the Year gives me great pride in knowing that I have the trust of senior leadership to represent Navy Medicine West and help shape the future of the Navy by being an example and mentor to junior Sailors,” Bruderer said.
True to form as a mentor, he also offered words of wisdom to his shipmates around the fleet, encouraging them to take advantage of all the opportunities the Navy has to offer, take on new challenges and give them your best effort, have a support system and seek out advice when needed because nobody succeeds on their own, and always take advantage of the opportunity to teach others.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the caliber of Sailors we have among our active and Reserve Sailors throughout Navy Medicine West,” said Weber. “HM1 Pomida and HM1 Bruderer, through their leadership, by mentoring and training their shipmates, have contributed to the Navy Medicine mission of ensuring both a ready medical force and warfighters who are ready to fight today.”
The Sailor of the Year program was established in 1972 by Former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize an individual Sailor who best represents the group of dedicated professional Sailors at each command and, ultimately, in the Navy.
