GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Dec. 7, 2019) — Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Commanding Officer Capt. Ray Leung spoke before a crowd of Pearl Harbor survivors' descendants, veterans and officials Saturday, Dec. 7, in honor of the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the first time the commemoration was held at the National Museum of the American Sailor.

This was the eighth commemoration that was organized by brothers Eric “Rick” Miller and Bob Miller of the Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors (SDPHS), the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Illinois Chapter 1 (PHSA), and Mike Lake, Commander of VFW Post 2992.

“We were very happy with the new venue. I think it is the right size,” said Rick Miller. “All staff involved were professional and courteous. Anything we needed we received. We would like to continue to have the ceremony at the museum.” He thanked all the museum staff for making the ceremony a success.

“I hope everyone takes a few minutes out of their day to thank Rick and Bob for all their hard work,” Leung said, addressing the crowd of about 100 people.

Their late father, Clarence "C.J." Miller, was aboard the USS Ramsay when the attack occurred. Rick and Bob Miller have spent the last 19 years honoring their father, the local survivors, the survivors that have passed away and all those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.

Bob Miller was the master of ceremonies. A two-bell ceremony honored the local Pearl Harbor survivors who passed away and all who perished on December 7, 1941. Navy Band Great Lakes provided the ceremonial music.

“Somberness and remembrance are hallmarks of honoring those whose lives were lost or damaged as they fought for America,” said Leung during his remarks. “But there is another way of remembering them—by being ready. It’s now our watch and readiness is the best remembrance we can give the veterans who have gone before us.”

A Pearl Harbor display area was open after the ceremony. This display has been put together over the last 28 years and is the private collection of the Miller family.
