Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR)

Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) engaged with current and prospective students during the launch of University of San Diego’s (USD) Cyber Bootcamp Dec. 4 encouraging the next generation of professionals to pursue a career in cybersecurity, one of the fastest growing fields in the country.

Conducted in partnership with Fullstack Academy, the USD Cyber Bootcamp is a 30-week program that provides hands-on, real-world experience in multiple facets of computing, networking, security and programming in offensive and defensive cybersecurity techniques, tools and procedures.

With the theme “breaking into cybersecurity,” the USD Cyber Bootcamp event featured leading cybersecurity professionals including Jara Tripiano, NAVWAR division head for cybersecurity and Paul Williams, chief security officer for Teredata.

Kicking off the event as the keynote speaker, Tripiano shared her personal story about how she decided to pursue a profession in cybersecurity.

“I came into the world of cybersecurity as an engineer by education and a helicopter pilot by profession,” said Tripiano. “As a young helicopter pilot in the Navy I had to be confident in the systems that I was using, confident that they would perform as designed, confident that they would keep me out of harm’s way. I did not consider that an adversary could exploit a system vulnerability and cause the equipment I trusted to do something unexpected. Unfortunately, today the operational community has to consider that possibility. Warfighters are in a cyber-fight, facing growing cyber threats 24/7, 365-days-a-year. It is why I chose cybersecurity as a profession and why we need others to do the same.”

Tripiano also spoke about the increase of cybersecurity career opportunities in San Diego, where cybersecurity and information warfare is going and how NAVWAR is leading the way.

“At NAVWAR, cyber is at the center of all that we do, and the demand for new talent only continues to grow,” said Tripiano. “We live in a world where technology is evolving at an unprecedented rate making it harder and harder to stay ahead of the competition. NAVWAR, our Navy and our nation is in need of more cyber professionals, like all of you here today, to help us outpace our adversaries at the ever-increasing speed of information warfare.”

Currently NAVWAR employs more than 3,500 cybersecurity professionals in San Diego, which is about 40% of the regional total according to a 2019 study conducted by the San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence.

NAVWAR provides a number of avenues for hiring including the new professionals program, multiple types of internships, wounded warrior and veteran hiring programs, educational partnership agreements and more.

Trained cybersecurity experts are in high demand, and the need for cyber professionals will continue to grow. The USD Cyber Bootcamp is just one example of how with continued education workers can launch an exciting and promising career in the field of cybersecurity, joining the effort to outpace our adversaries in today’s increasingly competitive environment.
