PHILADELPHIA (NNS) -- The city of Philadelphia, schools and colleges of New Jersey and Delaware are about to witness an event the likes of which they have not seen in a very long time, if ever - the Navy Swarm, as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army prepare to face off in their long-time friendly rivalry at the 120th Army-Navy football game.

Navy Recruiting Command (NRC), in conjunction with Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Philadelphia, is sending teams of recruiters to various schools and events throughout the city and neighboring areas in a mass-Navy recruiting effort called Swarm Philadelphia, Dec. 9-14, culminating in the football game.

The Swarm brings top recruiters from across the United States to promote the Navy’s mission and strengthen ties with local communities throughout the recruiting district. It is a new recruiting strategy to attract future Sailors to serve in the Navy the nation needs.

Hand-selected recruiters from NRC, NRD Philadelphia, and recruiting commands from across the nation will comprise a 46-person team of recruiters. During the week-long event, this team will have two objectives: recruiting the next generation of Sailors, and informing the public about the many benefits the Navy offers.

“We already have a lot of publicity that comes along with the Army-Navy game, so it made a lot of sense to leverage that: get talented recruiters into our district to swarm the Philadelphia AOR [area of operations], to help us target some of the hard to reach schools, strengthen bonds with the schools that we already have relations with, and build up relationships with the community,” said Cmdr. Kemi Elebute, commanding officer of NRD Philadelphia. “I expect with the influx of additional recruiters to ‘blanket’ the area, we will be able to get big benefits of return on investment, and with the addition of such Navy assets as the Burke and Nimitz, our return should be high.”

To support Philadelphia Swarm and bring hands-on experience to students, the Navy is bringing two of if its virtual reality (VR) assets, the Burke and the Nimitz experience, with the goal to transform and elevate the way people think about the Navy, while acquiring high-caliber talent.

The Burke and Nimitz are VR trucks that provide a unique experience, using virtual reality goggles for realistic 360-degree view and sound. The two trucks allow young adults to go on a VR mission to extract a SEAL team. The experience further appeals to a younger tech-savvy generation.

“It is a great opportunity to network with schools, local educators and our young generations - our future shipmates, leaders and defenders of our nation,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Elizabeth Biri, assigned to NRD Philadelphia. “As recruiters we have the opportunity to bring positive, and sometimes needed change into peoples’ lives and show them first-hand what the Navy has to offer. I have participated in multiple Swarms across the nation representing my district, but it’s great to finally bring Swarm to our home and highlight what NRD Philadelphia is capable of.”

NRD Philadelphia encompasses regions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, providing recruiting services from more than 30 recruiting stations.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 16 Navy Recruiting Districts and 10 NTAGS that serve more than 1,300 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
