Airmen attend Professional Military Education (PME) to gain the leadership knowledge and skills needed to progress in their military careers.

One option available for Airmen is attending in-residence training, which is an experience based training system.

Senior Airman Taylor Otheim, 114th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron F-16 crew chief recently completed Airmen Leadership School in order to become a Non-commissioned Officer where he received the Distinguished Graduate Award. As a distinguished graduate, Otheim was in the top ten percent of his class and demonstrated the leadership skills essential to being an NCO.

“It's an opportunity to better yourself personally and for the Air Force too,” said Otheim.

For those who prefer to learn hands on, in residence is the ideal training method. It is in a classroom setting, enabling Airmen to focus solely on their training at hand.

“For comprehension and remembering the training to bring it back with you, I feel like in-residence is better in that aspect,” Otheim said.

Airmen who train in-residence work with active duty, reserve, guard, coalition partners, and sister services. This provides them the opportunity to network with military members from different units and services.

“The more Airmen go in-residence, the easier the transition is going to be for when we go downrange when we deploy because those relationships have already been built, and those barriers broken down,” said Master Sgt. John Leffring, 114th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant. “It makes us better leaders downrange. You have someone who already knows what they need or what they’re looking for.”

Both Leffring and Otheim recommend in-residence training for its effectiveness, networking, and shared knowledge from members attending to bring back.

“I thought it was a great experience and would recommend it to anybody and everybody,” said Othein.
