The 185th Air Refueling Wing hosted a flight on the U.S. Air Force KC-135 Strato Tanker with the Sioux City high school’s Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps ‘JROTC’ program along with Columbus and Fremont, Nebraska’s Civil Air Patrol ‘CAP’ Saturday, December 7, 2019 over South Dakota.
The 26 civilian participants witnessed a midflight refueling of U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 114th Fighter Wing at Joe Goes Field Air Force base in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
1st Lt. Chris Robbins from the Civil Air Patrol in Columbus, Nebraska said, ‘This flight is a chance for cadets to experience the military without having to be in it. Being in the Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force we are always looking to learn more about each aircraft and the Air Force.’
During the preflight brief the cadets learned where the fuel is located and how refueling is done.
“We are refueling six F-16’s today. The boom you will see is used as a fuel funnel, it is 28 feet long and will swing down from under the tail of the aircraft. Putting you about 30 feet from the F-16 when you are in the boom pod,” Staff Sgt. Corey Corocran explained before cadets boarded the aircraft.
