    VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Dannette Zelker, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, currently serves as an instructor at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.

    Zelker enlisted in the Navy in March of 2014, and upon completing Basic Training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, she reported to IWTC Corry Station, formerly known as the Center for Information Dominance Corry Station, for Cryptologic Technician (Technical) “A” and “C” schools.

    Upon graduation, she reported to her first duty station, USS Russell (DDG 59), homeported in San Diego. During this tour, she deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet, where she operated as the lead technician and work center supervisor. Additionally, she earned her enlisted information warfare and enlisted surface warfare specialist devices.

    Following her tour aboard USS Russell, she reported to IWTC Virginia Beach. She has provided 24 hours of instruction for the SSX-1 Ship Electronic Support System course, and as course supervisor for SSX-1 and Joint Tactical Terminal (JTT) courses, she managed 56 hours of additional instruction. She also oversaw the qualification of one junior Sailor and corrected two Internal Management Course Review discrepancies.

    In her free time, she volunteers as the Meals on Wheels command coordinator, where she led nine Sailors volunteering 27 hours and delivering 48 meals to the elderly throughout the Hampton Roads area. Additionally, she provided 15 hours of master training specialist training while completing an undergraduate course which led to three credit hours toward her bachelor’s degree in biblical studies.

    “I love utilizing my personality to create an exciting environment for all students to learn,” said Zelker. “Additionally, I take pride in teaching my classes and tailoring them for every student’s level of comprehension. I love when my students apply what they learned in my class for application or to train other Sailors.”

    IWTC Virginia Beach, located in Dam Neck Annex, currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contractors who train over 6,500 students every year. It is one of four schoolhouses for the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.

    With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
