FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Two XVIII Airborne Corps Soldiers battled to the top of a field of 12 competitors to be named XVIII Airborne Corps’ Career Counselor of the Year during a two-day competition finishing Nov. 19, 2019 on Fort Bragg, N.C.

Sergeant Bo Walker, a U.S. Army active component career counselor, 101st Airborne Division, and Sgt. 1st Class Joey Thomas, a U.S. Army Reserve component career counselor, 3rd Infantry Division, won the XVIII Airborne Corps’ Career Counselor of the Year Competition for their respective components.

The competition consisted of three events – a board appearance, an Army Physical Fitness Test and a fifty question written exam.

“I honestly showed up as prepared as I thought I could be and did my best and waited for the results," said Thomas, a first-year career counselor and first-time competitor. “The biggest challenge was not knowing what the written exam questions would consist of and what types of opinionated questions the board members would ask.”

Sergeant Major David Herbert, XVIII Airborne Corps command career counselor, presided over the board.

“We’re doing great things retaining our Soldiers and maintaining the readiness of our Army,” Herbert said, “The new Chief of Staff says ‘Winning matters,’ and it does. He also speaks about people being a priority and [career counselors] are on the front line of that defense.”

Along with earning the title “XVIII Airborne Corps Career Counselor of the Year,” both Walker and Thomas were awarded The Army Commendation Medal. They will go on to represent the XVIII Airborne Corps at the U.S. Army Forces Command Career Counselor Competition later this year.
