The Fort Hood Resiliency Campus held the Alpha Warrior competition at the Applied Functional Fitness Center on November 20.

“The purpose of the competition was to get Soldiers active in a fun and competitive way,'' Spc. Kimberly Cruz, a medical logistics specialist assigned to the 582nd Medical Logistics Company, 1st Medical Brigade, and organizer of the competition, said. “It combined physical fitness and promotes team building with their peers.”

The competition tested the competitor's physical abilities and taught the Soldiers that they can push themselves further through will power, even when at the brink of quitting, Cruz said. The Alpha Warrior Competition was a test for the whole body that exercised their core, shoulders, biceps, cardio and grip strength.

“It’s different in the way that it works out your body,” Pfc. Dylan Logsdon, an aircraft structural repairer assigned to B. Company, 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, and member of the winning team, said. “It was tough, but my team were huge motivators. It was also beneficial because we worked as a team, which makes us physically stronger, but also helps you get past mental barriers as well.”

The competition was made up of four-man teams as a cumulative timed run. The first challenge was a 50 meter bear crawl sled drag, followed by a teammate doing a 50 meter seated sled pull. The team then chose their best climber to do the rock wall. The competitor had to climb up to the top, then across 100 feet and then back down.

Their final challenge was the Alpha Warrior rig itself. Each member of the team took turns beginning with the climbing peg board, followed by the ring board, and the cliffhanger, which consisted of two inch ledges at various heights. After a short break, the competitors tackled the hanging rings and cones, and then the rope swings.

“Absolutely everything is important about staying physically fit,” Sgt. Calvin Sera, an aircraft structural repairer assigned to B Company, 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, said. “Not just in the Army, but in life in general, so you can have a long life and have fun with your kids.”
