HONOLULU – U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) Command Surgeon Rear Adm. Louis Tripoli spoke at the 66th Pacific Island Health Officers Association (PIHOA) Executive Board Meeting Nov. 21, 2019.

PIHOA aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) by providing a unified credible voice on health issues of regional significance.

USINDOPACOM is partnered with PIHOA to strengthen health capabilities in the region as well as provide medical care, prevent disease and injury, promote healthy lifestyles, and protect the environment.

“USINDOPACOM and PIHOA are working to create a partnership that is helping people across the Pacific Island chain,” said Tripoli. “We want to leverage the U.S. military capabilities in logistics, transport and security to assist the region with their goals.

Tripoli discussed strategic directions for capacity development support moving forward for the USAPI.

“We want to serve as a joint, combined interagency of medical capability and capacity building and to apply it to the Pacific Island countries,” said Tripoli.

PIHOA was created in 1986 by health officials of the six USAPI, US territories of American Samoa and Guam, US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and the three US Compact Treaty Nations of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau.

“I recognize clearly that there are people in need right now,” said Tripoli. “But I can tell you with certainty that INDOPACOM is very much committed to doing everything that is within our power to help.”

USINDOPACOM protects and defends, in concert with other U.S. Government agencies, the territory of the United States, its people, and its interests. With allies and partners, USINDOPACOM is committed to enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific region by promoting security cooperations, encouraging peaceful development, responding to contingencies, deterring aggression, and, when necessary, fighting to win. This approach is based on partnership, presence, and military readiness.
