Engineer company Soldiers unload vehicles, equipment from railcars following 2019 Operation Resolute Castle deployment

For several days in mid-November, Soldiers with the 389th Engineer Battalion worked with Fort McCoy Logistics Readiness Center (LRC) personnel and others to unload 35-plus railcars with military vehicles and equipment.

The movement was the return of vehicles and equipment used in the 389th’s involvement in Operation Resolute Castle 2019 in Poland earlier in the year, said Fort McCoy Transportation Officer D.J. Eckland with the LRC Transportation Division.

Unit Soldiers initially loaded railcars for the deployment in February after receiving training in a railhead operations class by representatives of Marine Corps Logistics Base-Barstow, Calif., Eckland said.

Operation Resolute Castle is an Army Europe-led multinational operation and includes many Army engineer units and personnel, according to previous news articles about the training.

The 389th Engineer Battalion in an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Davenport, Iowa.

Whether it was transporting troops to post for training during World War II, or its sending off equipment and supplies for a present-day exercise, rail continues to be a primary mode of transportation at Fort McCoy. Rail is one of the post’s strategic transportation missions, Eckland said.

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
