NORFOLK, Va. – Cmdr. Jack Morris relieved Cmdr. Raymond Sudduth as commanding officer of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Norfolk during a change of command ceremony onboard Naval Station Norfolk Nov. 14.
CNATTU Norfolk is part of the MyNavy HR force development team that is charged with the entire “street-to-fleet” process that spans recruiting and training Sailors in an increasingly competitive talent market.
Morris had served as the unit’s executive officer since May 2018.
“I can’t think of a better person to lead this premier learning site as they introduce new trainers to the fleet and implement MyNavy HR training initiatives,” said Sudduth. “His loyalty, integrity and attention to detail are second to none. I can’t thank him enough for his friendship and support throughout my tour.”
While in command of CNATTU Norfolk, Sudduth oversaw complex budget requirements and management. He was responsible for over 160 personnel daily, encompassing 97 courses of instructions, while serving a student population of over 4,100.
“CNATTU Norfolk’s staff is an amazing crew that sincerely cares about each other and our students,” said Sudduth. “They have impressed me, our students and our partners with their wealth of knowledge and ability to think out of the box to achieve our mission.”
CNATTU provides rate specific aviation technical training, while professionally delivering specialized aviation “C” school training to maintain and operate air weapons systems supporting MH-53E/MH-60S helicopters, E-2C/D airborne early warning aircraft, C-2A(R) carrier onboard delivery aircraft, airborne mine counter measure, MQ-8C Firescout, aviation maintenance administration management, aviation boatswain's mate, aviation ordnanceman, interior communications electrician and aircrew survival equipmentmen professional and rating skills.
“I could not have asked for a more professional and motivated team,” said Sudduth. “They have shown me firsthand what dedication and pride is all about. It has been a true honor and privilege to say I was the commanding officer of CNATTU Norfolk.”
Upon his assumption of duties, Morris expressed how humbled and honored he was to have the opportunity to serve as the next commanding officer.
“I am extremely thankful for those that helped me achieve this milestone,” said Morris, who acknowledged in particular the support of his family.
“Each day we will strive for excellence. Number one if you will, we will hold each other accountable to make a difference in the personal and professional lives of our students and staff. We will seek to maximize the impact of our mission to train the fleet, improving mission readiness, and we will not fail. I look forward to the challenges that will come before us and the opportunity for us to overcome them as a high performing team seeking excellence.”
A native of Hinesville, Georgia, Morris enlisted in the Navy in 1987 as an air traffic controller and advanced through the ranks to chief petty officer. He commissioned via the Limited Duty Officer Program in 2001.
Morris graduated with honors from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics in 2009. He received his Executive Master’s in Business Administration from Naval Postgraduate School in 2014.
His fleet operational assignments include tours as an air traffic controller and the air traffic control officer for USS Saratoga (CV 60), two tours aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), and USS Kearsarge (LHD 3).
During these tours, he participated in multiple campaigns including Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Noble Anvil, Allied Force, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn.
Ashore, Morris served as an air traffic controller and air traffic control facility officer at Naval Air Station (NAS) Norfolk; NAS Meridian; NAS Keflavik, Iceland; Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility Virginia Capes where he also served as the air space officer; and NAS Oceana.
Additionally, he served as a Department of Defense liaison to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of State on domestic and international aviation matters related to national security at FAA headquarters, Washington, D.C.
His joint tour included an assignment as the executive officer, Provincial Reconstruction Team Khost Province, Afghanistan.
The command welcomes Cmdr. Marcus Creighton as their new executive officer.
