NEW MARKET, Ala. -- Several U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command Soldiers celebrated Huntsville/Madison County Heroes Week with more than 600 students and other veterans at Buckhorn Middle School on Nov. 7.
AMCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Mike Dove discussed his family’s history of military service and the pride he feels in following that path.
Soldiers from the AMCOM Operations team were excited about the opportunity to meet with students.
“Our shop jumped at the chance to engage with local middle-school students,” said Col. Terry Grisham, AMCOM Operations military deputy. “It helps them see Solders as real people and not just what they may see in news stories about world events.”
Other Operations Soldiers including Maj. Ryan Greenawalt, Capt. Maria Miranda, and Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Flowers, joined AMCOM Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander Capt. Tracy Ariza, and HHC 1st Sgt. Teddy Wade in telling the Army story.
Retired AMCOM Commander Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, and retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jeff Peterson, currently an Army Civilian, with the Combat Capabilities Development Command on Redstone Arsenal also took part in the day-long event.
After telling seventh- and eighth-graders a little about themselves and why they chose to serve the U.S. Army, the Solider-veterans answered questions, introduced students to various types of military field gear and common activities, like how to perform a correct push-up and wear protective equipment.
Grisham said the Soldiers and veterans understood their presence may have sparked some student interest in a military career.
”The future ranks of our Army will likely be some of them,” he added. “I always enjoy talking to young people and answering their questions about military service. They really listened and seemed genuinely interested in what we do for our nation.”
“Heroes Week,” a tradition in the Tennessee Valley, honors U.S. military veterans throughout the week before Veterans Day.
