Aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), Cmdr. Ray A. Glenn succeeded Cmdr. Christopher J. Schwarz as commanding officer Nov. 8, during a traditional change of command ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve with the Sailors and officers aboard Gonzalez and I am extremely humbled and proud of their accomplishments,” said Schwarz. “This has been my most rewarding tour. I am confident Cmdr. Glenn will continue the valued traditions and operational excellence of USS Gonzalez.”

The ceremony marked the end of a very successful 18-month command tour for Schwarz. During his term, Gonzalez successfully completed a full work-up cycle, certifying the ship and crew in all mission areas. Schwarz also successfully led Gonzalez through a seven-and-a-half month deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Responsibility.

Schwarz leaves the ship to join the staff of Naval Surface Forces Atlantic.

Glenn assumed command in accordance with the Navy’s Fleet-up Program after serving as Gonzalez’s executive officer. His previous assignments include sea tours aboard USS Ticonderoga (CG 47) as Gunnery Officer, Machinery One Division Officer in USS George Washington (CVN 73), Operations Officer in USS Cole (DDG 67), Main Propulsion Assistant (MPA) in USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), and Executive Officer (XO) in USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79).

Commissioned in 1995, Gonzalez is named after Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez, who gave his life during the Battle of Hue City during the Vietnam War. His mother, Ms. Doila Gonzalez, was in attendance at the change of command ceremony.
