PORT HUENEME, Calif.-Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for an Aegis Combat System Computer Lab, Oct. 21. The approximately $4 million project will provide a single laboratory that supports In-Service Engineering Aegis Computer Infrastructure efforts, including software development and testing, Common Processing System, Common Display System, and camera/video distribution systems.

The 5,000 sq. ft. facility will allow the development of equipment alterations for the combat system, and provide an environment to support testing and evaluation. Completion is expected in 2020.

The lab will save the command time, travel costs and improve turnaround time for fleet in-service engineering support.

Earlier this year, Air Dominance Department engineers successfully demonstrated access to the AEGIS Weapon System (AWS) Virtual Test Bed at the Innovative Defense Technologies laboratory in Arlington, Va., by using a classified workstation over the Secret Defense Research Engineering Network. The demonstration proved the capability of virtual technology to support future combat systems on a multitude of platforms including the AWS and served as a model for plans to construct the command’s own Aegis distance-support lab.

Virtualization, augmentation and data-driven analytics, are useful tools in the implementation of the command’s vision for the In-Service Engineering Agent of the Future—an enterprise-wide campaign launched in spring 2018. Emergent science and technologies such as these will drive not only the future of fleet maintenance but advance the nation’s security in alignment with the National Defense Strategy and strategic priorities of the Naval Sea Systems Command. The virtualized combat system has already been used to improve fleet capability on a Navy ship at sea.

“This is the first of many projects to support the fleet not just of today, but of tomorrow,” stated Commanding Officer, Capt. Ray Acevedo at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We are not stopping here, this is just one step forward and we have high expectations for the future.”
