The Navy conducted its Safety Fair at the Department of Defense complex in Suffolk, VA on 6 Nov. The joint collaboration consisted of organizers from Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), Naval Network Warfare Command (NAVNETWARCOM), Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) Suffolk and Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) who came together to share winter safety facts for the military and civilian workforce.
The team worked together to gather a plethora of vendors and organizers to kick off safety campaigns emphasizing winter conditions and activities that require special precautions – both on and off duty. “The message appears to be resonating with the military and civilian workforce as people look out for each other,” said Chief Michael Spicer, NAVNETWARCOM Safety Officer. “So far this year, no off-duty fatalities have been reported.”
It was a great opportunity for the whole family to learn how to increase personal safety and wellness through health screenings, demonstrations, and expertise from more than 30 exhibitors.
The commands’ Safety Officers used this opportunity to promote workplace and community safety by providing educational, fun and relevant ways to create a safe work and living environment.
“This is my third time participating in this event; each time is based on seasonal opportunities,” said Officer Chris Balasonne, Suffolk Fire and Rescue. The ‘critical days’ are designated as the period between Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. This time the Safety Fair is geared more toward precautions for the winter such as vehicle safety tips, warnings for Christmas lights and trees, properly maintaining portable heaters, and dressing adequately for winter weather. Balasonne encourages members to “check smoke detector batteries which should be changed concurrently when the time changes.”
Vendors and community organizers offered information booths, wrecked vehicle exhibit and pamphlets designed educate and raise safety awareness while having fun and encouraging individuals to lead safer lifestyles. “Safety training is mandated throughout the year and this gives our workforce a hands-on approach to interact with other safety organizations. We find this style is more favorable than online learning or presenting slide shows,” said Spicer.
The Junior Enlisted Association (JEA) collaborated to present the “Keep What You Earned” campaign. Effort focuses on promoting methods to social drinking responsibly. “Earn your rank, don’t jeopardize it,” said Petty Officer Second Class Ashton Boyt, NETWARCOM JEA. “We inform junior Sailors of other ideas and ways to have fun that do not involve alcohol, such as bowling or sports. It’s about making good decisions,” said Boyt.
Iterating the importance of safety is critical and part of military life. It serves the purpose of identifying various hazards and providing helpful safety tips. “I’ve learned so much from each booth. For one, I need to recertify my CPR, it’s only good for two years,” said Lily Shinneman, NAVIFOR participant.
Navy safety officials also recommended keeping a winter survival kit in the trunk, with essential supplies including a working flashlight and spare batteries, first-aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush, blankets and nonperishable, high-energy foods such as nuts and granola bars.
    Other safety tips included:
    • Keep a windshield scraper and automotive snow brush
    • Dress warmly. Wear loose‐fitting, layered and light‐weight clothing. Wet clothing loses its insulating value quickly and can accelerate hypothermia.
    • Cold weather strains the heart. Shoveling snow or pushing a vehicle if you’re unaccustomed to exercising can cause a heart attack or make other medical conditions worse. Take frequent breaks when performing strenuous activities.
    • Lookout for symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia.

NAVNETWARCOM was established July 11, 2002 and directs, operates, maintains, and secures the Navy’s networks and communications and leverages Joint Space capabilities for Navy and Joint operations. Task Force 1010 was established in April 2015 to tactically command and control the Navy’s computer and telecommunications stations globally.
