FORT CARSON, Colo. – The U.S. Military Academy at West Point football team, the Black Knights, held its biennial pep rally prior to its much-anticipated rivalry game against the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons on Nov. 1, 2019, on Fort Carson.

The pep rally has grown into a tradition that attracts Families, Soldiers, fans, and the team’s support staff.

While the rally is a morale booster to the players and staff, it is also a huge community event where kids and adults can enjoy themselves.

“The idea is to pep up the team and the community so that they go into their game with high spirits and just give it their best,” said Mike O’Donnell, director of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

There are many activities at the rally, like bounce houses, fire pits, a DJ, music by the 4th Infantry Division band as well as the team’s band. Additionally, many food vendors were available for everyone to enjoy.

“The best part is the burning of the Air Force effigy,” said West Ikama, a West Point graduate and retired Army captain. “It brings out everyone’s energy for the Army football team and really gets the blood flowing.”

Despite the bitterly cold weather, the pep rally had a huge turnout as the fervor for the team reached a fevered pitch, readying the fans to watch the Knights take down the Falcons, who’ve had a long-standing rivalry since 1972.

In the end, however, the excitement wasn’t quite enough to compel a victory as the Army came close but unfortunetly lost to the Air Force 17-13.
