ATLANTA (NNS) – Rear Adm. Jamie Sands, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) visited Atlanta Consortium Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) units, Nov. 5.
With Sands was Master Chief Petty Officer Jimmy Hailey III, NSTC Command Master Chief.
The Atlanta Consortium is comprised of Morehouse University NROTC and Georgia Institute of Technology NROTC programs and their cross-town affiliates.
While at Morehouse, they spoke with the midshipman battalion about NROTC, leadership and the Navy. They later met with Morehouse University President, Dr. David Thomas, to discuss the NROTC program.
They also spoke with midshipmen at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and met with Dean John Tone, the interim Dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, within which Georgia Institute of Technology’s NROTC academic programs fall.
NROTC units report to NSTC, and command visits are an opportunity for professional development for the midshipman as they interact with a flag officer and Master Chief Petty Officer, as well as a chance for midshipmen to ask questions about the program and the Navy. The visits also give Sands a chance to hear about any concerns or suggestions from the midshipman and unit staffs who report to him.
“The energy and pride shown today by the Morehouse College and Georgia Tech Battalions was spectacular,” said Capt. Patrick Foege, Atlanta Consortium Commanding Officer. “The midshipmen were inspired by Rear Adm. Sands’ words on warrior toughness and the NSTC Commander saw firsthand the professionalism and enthusiasm of these future Navy and Marine Corps Officers.”
Sands and Hailey spoke with the midshipmen about leadership, changes to the NROTC program to improve training, and the need for Warfighters ready to lead the Navy and Marine Corps into the future.
“Rear Adm. Sands’ visit to the NROTC Atlanta Region Consortium was refreshing,” said Midshipmen 1st Class Negus Dowling. “Not only did he put a face and a personality to the leadership in our chain of command, but the visit also humanized and clarified the perspective and intent of the organization that has recruited us for the defense of our nation."
The NROTC program is overseen by Rear Adm. Jamie Sands and his Naval Service Training Command staff at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. NROTC was established to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, loyalty and core values in order to commission college graduates as Navy and Marine Corps officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the uniformed services and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
NSTC oversees 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy, as well as the Navy's Citizenship Development program. NSTC also includes Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's only boot camp also at Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy ROTC program at more than 160 colleges and universities, Officer Training Command (OTC) Newport, Rhode Island, and Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
