The military must be effective in combat to win wars and save lives. Training is one of the cornerstones paramount being an effective fighting force. Equally important is the strength of the military to work as one cohesive unit, as a team.
The Massachusetts National Guard works hard to ensure it is a fully capable, lethal and effective force, training to meet the demands of serving the community in which they live, protecting the country and maintaining operational excellence.
There are many methodologies used to meet this objective. The staff ride is one of those methods. Defined as a systematic historical study of a campaign combined with a physical presence on the site of operations of that campaign. The primary objective of the event is to further the professional development of its leaders.
The Soldiers and Airmen selected for the 2019 noncommissioned officer staff ride travelled to Saratoga, NY to study the Battle of Saratoga, Nov. 2-3, 2019.
Walking the grounds provided the ability to analyze the terrain on which the battle occurred, allowing leaders to see, touch and feel how the landscape influenced the outcome. Viewing the terrain helped those involved picture the events and discuss tactics that could have affected the outcome.
The staff ride represents a persuasive and unique method of conveying lessons from the past to present day Army and Air leadership for current application. The goal is to develop professional leadership in order to be effective on the air-land battlefield.
"The intent of the 2019 Saratoga Staff Ride is to provide professional development for senior Air Force and Army NCO's in the Massachusetts National Guard," said Maj. Gen. Gary W. Keefe, Adjutant General, Massachusetts National Guard.
The visit to Saratoga included group discussions on what makes an effective leader, a visit to the New York Military History Museum where actual weapons and other historical artifacts were viewed, and a the site visit to the Saratoga battlefields where a strategic exercise was conducted.
The NCOs that participated in the event found the event to be extremely educational and fun, an excellent learning experience.
"It is a great opportunity for NCOs to get out into a different environment, interact with other Soldiers and Airmen at their level and get a great history lesson," said Master Sgt. John Keeton, Information Systems Chief, Massachusetts Army National Guard.
