FORT HOOD, TX -- The Texas State University softball team visited the 1st Cavalry Division to gain an understanding of the importance of female leadership and followership, 27 Oct. The softball team participated in a panel with three female officers and were given a live-fire demonstration by Battery C, 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team.
The softball team met with, Lt. Col. Tasha Lowery, commander of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Maj. Ashley Welte, deputy intelligence officer for the division, and Cpt. Lauren Ulmer, assistant intelligence officer for Division Artillery, who shared about female empowerment through discussing team-building skills, leadership, and followership.
“Today was really empowering for us,” said Hailey MacKay, a captain of the TXST softball team. “I think to see the skills that we learn on the field are just as applicable in life -- is really powerful.”
MacKay said she really enjoyed the panel. “I think it’s really cool to see somebody that represents what you want to be -- as a person, and the qualities you want to have -- to be successful.”
The panel was an opportunity for military female leadership to talk about their personal stories and how they earned their roles.
“To have them share what they found successful in their careers and how they got there, I think was really awesome of them to be vulnerable with us,” said MacKay.
The goal of the TXST softball team is to understand what it takes to build a good team, explained Ricci Woodard, the team’s head coach.
“I felt like there was no better place to do that than with the military,” said Woodard.
With over 15 years of experience in the U.S. Army, Lowery is very familiar with being a leader and knows what it takes to build a successful team.
“What it takes to build a team is first, having someone to lead that is competent, caring, passionate in what the mission is and genuinely cares -- for the mission and individuals that will carry out the mission,” said Lowery.
Much like the Army, the team establishes a mission, trains and develops the skills they need in order to win. In the softball team’s case, their mission is to win the Sunbelt Conference Championship.
“To build a strong team, the foundation needs to be trust in the leader and trust in each other,” said Lowery.
Reflecting on these remarks, Woodard said it was easy for the softball team to relate to this advice.
“Even though we are all doing this at a different level, we are all still trying to achieve the same thing -- team building,” said Woodard.
