Four command Sailors of the Year were announced on Oct. 28 during an all hands call in the hangar bay of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

Commanding officer Capt. Max Clark announced Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Soane Sili as Senior Sailor of the Year, Damage Controlman 2nd Class Mayra Ochoa as Sailor of the Year, Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 3rd Class Jennifer Gutierrez as Junior Sailor of the Year and Yeoman Seaman Nykeisha Hogg as Blue Jacket Sailor of the Year.

“I’m tremendously proud of all Nimitz Sailors who put forth maximum effort on a daily basis to improve themselves and to get this ship ready,” said Clark. “I am especially glad to recognize these four Sailors of the Year for their exceptional performance, work ethic, and dedication to mission accomplishment. They’re an example for all of us to follow.”

Gutierrez, a Miami native, works on survival equipment and troubleshooting and performing maintenance on life rafts, parachutes and ejection seats with her division.

“It’s been an honor to be selected as Junior Sailor of the Year for Nimitz,” said Gutierrez. “I’m thankful for those who have mentored, instructed and assisted me along the way and helped make this possible. I wouldn’t be anywhere without them.”

Gutierrez said that winning the award wasn’t a solo effort, dedicating her win to her peers in Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department who helped her achieve the Junior Sailor of the Year award.
“Winning this award proves that this was a team effort,” said Gutierrez.

The command SSOY, SOY, JSOY and BJOY were selected by a board of senior judges during an interview process, testing each nominee’s knowledge of U.S. Naval history, programs and policies, basic military requirements, current events and leadership. Military bearing and record of job performance were also taken into consideration.

The Chief of Naval Operations established the SOY program in 1972 to recognize the outstanding Sailors of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. The program is designed to recognize the best all-around Sailors from the ranks of E-3 through E-6.
USS Nimitz is currently in port preparing for future operations.
