    20th CBRNE Command

On Oct. 21-25, specialized teams from the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command conducted a field training exercise on Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

The Nuclear Disablement Team (NDT) 3 trained NDT1 to take over the command’s mission as the National Technical Nuclear Forensics Ground Collection Task Force (GCTF). NDT1, and 11 Soldiers from the 9th Chemical Company, 110th Chemical Battalion at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington, exercised their tactics, techniques and procedures prior to taking over as the GCTF for six months beginning on Dec. 1. During that time, all team members will be on a two-hour recall to report for duty.

A key part of the exercise involved coordination with two officers from the Air Force Technical Applications Center as well as role players representing the FBI and the Department of Energy, all tasked agencies that would be involved in the investigation following a nuclear detonation on U.S. soil.

In addition, a specially configured Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, from A Company, 2-135 Ground Support Aviation Battalion from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, also participated in the training. The Blackhawk carried the Aerial Radiation Detection and Identification Measurement System consisting of detector-filled pods that measure fall-out radiation while validating the radiation fallout model prepared by DOE scientists.

NDT1 will now provide mission command of radiation debris sample collection missions in support of Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of State, and the Department of Energy.

For their meritorious achievements during the NTNF field training exercise, Brig. Gen. James Bonner, 20th CBRNE Commander, presented his coin to five members of the joint team. They were (from Headquarters and Headquarters Company), 20th CBRNE Command): Maj. Steven Buhler and Pfc Cameron Clayton; and from the 9th Chemical Company – Staff Sgt. Oreng Osting, Spc. Nam Yoo and Pfc. Luzhan Zhang.
