Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh, Ind. - Nearly 200 Indiana high school students from the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) from around the state competed in the State Raider Championship at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana on Saturday, Oct. 26th. The Indiana National Guard hosted and facilitated this first-ever event at the state level. The Raider Championship tested the cadet's physical fitness while working on team-building skills through a competitive spirit. Sixteen teams of 10 to 12 competitors each from high schools around the state competed in five events, including the Physical Team Test, Robe Bridge, Cross-Country Rescue, Raider Gauntlet Obstacle Course and the 1.5-Mile Team Run.

"This competition is the culmination of a lot of training by the cadets from the 16 Indiana high schools competing," said Col. (Ret.) Jerry Hadley, director of Army instruction for Indianapolis Public Schools. "These students have put in as much time and effort as any athlete participating in a varsity high school sport. The events will stress them physically and mentally and require a great amount of teamwork. We appreciate the Indiana National Guard's support to make this a true Indiana State Championship."

The day ended with trophies awarded to the top three teams in the five individual events and the top three overall winners by Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Winslow of the Indiana National Guard. Hobart edged out Marion by one second to score bragging rights as the first State Raider Champions. Hobart placed first in three events while Marion tallied up wins in two challenges. Third place overall went to Elkhart H.S.

" We look forward to further building partnerships between the Indiana National Guard and JROTC. An event like this allows the students to get realistic training in a competitive environment, "said Sgt. Maj. Michael J. Nice, Indiana Army National Guard. "Everything they do is going to be evaluated per army regulations."

The next step for the Indiana JROTC program is to compete at the three-day National Raider Championship at Gerald Lawhorn Boy Scout Camp in Molena, Georgia, on Nov. 1st.
