Golf course shows appreciation to members

The Fort Jackson Golf Course showed its appreciation to annual membership holders Oct. 4 by hosting a shotgun tournament. More than 185 course members attended the day-long event to enjoy a game with teammates and a chance to win gift certificates and prizes.

“Today is our annual membership appreciation day,” said Mike Casto, general manager for the course. “We have morning and afternoon starts. We provide breakfast, lunch and food after (the game).”

Casto said the golf course holds special events throughout the year that closes the course to non-party members. By hosting special events, the golf course is able to generate enough funds to maintain the greens and offer the pro shop and eatery. Members are aware of the closed events that are held throughout the year before purchasing memberships.
“We show our members how much we appreciate them allowing us to do that,” Casto said about the closures. “It helps keep us financially successful.”

The shotgun game began early morning while the South Carolina temperatures were still relatively low. Four-person teams of golfers filled the neatly lined row of golf carts and began their games. Throughout the course, the best ball was used at each hole to make the game run faster. Side games were also held at certain holes including longest drive and closest to the pin. Mulligans, or do-overs, were offered at a price to players to help make better scores.

“We played the Old Hickory course and we finished with a net score of 55 and a half which placed us first in net,” said Chris Tate, a club member. “Today was a great day, it was a fun day.”

Two courses were available to play during the tournament, the Wildcat course and the course Tate and his team played to earn the highest net score title. Tate said his team was presented with a first place certificate. Tate also took first place in the closest to the pin side game. He was awarded with a gift certificate to the course’s pro shop.

As teams finished their games, they gathered at the pavilion and eagerly awaited for their team rankings. Golfers were treated to snacks and refreshments as they mingled with fellow golfers before the event ended.
“The team really stepped up and made it happen,” Casto said. “It will be a long day but it’s worth the effort.”
