SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. –

Military Working Dog Kuli T672, 4th Security Forces Squadron, retired during a ceremony, October 11, 2019, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base after eight years of distinguished service.

The ceremony included a presentation of the meritorious service medal, retirement pin and a bone presentation to the U.S. Air Force veteran for his 56 dog-years of duty.

“Working with him for so long and then actually having him in the house, it’s great,” said Staff Sgt. Steven Matias, 4 SFS MWD handler. “You can see his whole demeanor change. He’s so happy just to be able to run around freely and get all the love and attention that he wants. He’s absolutely amazing.”

K-9s share a long-standing partnership with American service members in times of warfare, historically aiding as messengers and guardians. As the comprehension of their abilities develops, they are trained to assist in diverse law enforcement operations.

“They are an enhancement we can’t get enough of,” said Maj. Marc Stanco, 4 SFS commander. “Everything from explosives to the narcotics detection, they keep our team members safe. Not just at Seymour Johnson, but across the Air Force they’re vital to our force protection mission.”

Kuli was committed to accomplishing the mission and supported Joint Task Force North at Fort Bliss, TX for five months. He also assisted a team in identifying and prohibiting transnational criminal activities including the detection of more than $14 million worth of narcotics at the Southern border.

Kuli retired to his handler from the 4 SFS to begin his new life as a family pet.
