STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (NNS) -- Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) in conjunction with Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh are sending teams of recruiters to various schools and events throughout the Penn State University and neighboring areas in a mass-Navy recruiting effort called Penn State Swarm, Oct. 15-19.

The Swarm brings top recruiters from across the United States to promote the Navy’s mission and strengthen ties with community members throughout the state college area.

Hand-selected recruiters from NRC, NTAG Pittsburgh and recruiting commands from around the nation comprise a 58-person team of recruiters. Swarm is a new recruiting strategy to recruit Future Sailors to serve in the Navy the nation needs

During the Swarm, recruiters have two objectives; recruiting the next generation of Sailors, and informing the public about the many benefits the Navy offers.

“Swarm is definitely a direction the Navy needed to go,” said Machinists Mate (Nuclear) 1st Class Matthew Theis, a nuclear field talent scout assigned to NTAG Northern Plains. “It gets us to think out of the box. The fact that we bring in national recruiters from different districts and different NTAGS it allows us to expand ideas and get people on the same plane."

The week’s events will feature Navy representation at the Pennsylvania College of Technology Career Fair, a mass enlistment of future Sailors at the Penn State vs University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey game, and an appearance at the Penn State vs. Michigan football game.

Recruiters will also conduct in-classroom presentations, talk to students about life after graduation and answer questions about Navy careers and education funding.

A Navy highlight for many students is the opportunity to visit the Burke, a virtual reality truck that allows young adults to go on a mission to extract a SEAL team. To further appeal to a younger tech-savvy generation, virtual reality goggles will be provided to students for a realistic 360-degree view on an aircraft carrier’s flight deck.

“A lot of planning went into this and it should be a great event,” said Chief Navy Counselor James Pullom, the marketing and advertising officer assigned to NTAG Pittsburgh. “It’s definitely helpful to have seasoned and successful recruiters come from other districts nationally to help keep things on track.”

There are 10 more swarms scheduled out to 2020 with the purpose of informing the public about the Navy and the career opportunities it provides.

NTAG Pittsburgh, part of Navy Recruiting Command, recruits the next generation of Navy Sailors throughout areas in Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Maryland. NTAG Pittsburgh is one of 10 NTAGs nationwide.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 16 Navy Recruiting Districts and 10 NTAGS that serve more than 1,300 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
