Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow in conjunction with Barstow Community College, staged a Career and Education Expo on the campus of the college, Oct. 3.
Jennifer Kennedy, Personal and Professional Development Technician with MCCS, said more than 200 students, Marines and other interested expo-goers cruised among the 34 informational booths set up outside and inside the Performing Arts Center at Barstow Community College.
“This is the first time we’ve held the Career and Education Expo off base and made it open to the public,” Kennedy said.
Those attending the fair could choose from several law enforcement agencies with open job availability, including West Covina Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff Department, MCLB Barstow’s Marine Corps Police Department, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Several educational institutions also manned booths offering jobs as well as educational advice including Barstow Unified School District, Silver Valley Unified School District, American Military University, Ashford University, and Barstow Community College.
“The MCLB Barstow Behavioral Health Department offered resources for Community Outreach and Program Awareness” Kennedy said.
Other prospective employers included the U.S. Census Bureau, Desert Valley Medical Group, GEO Group, Inc.; J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Mary Kay Cosmetics Global, military recruiters from the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, and Army; Vinell Arabia, LLC; and Walmart Distribution Center.
Fort Irwin was represented by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs Department.
“We had nearly 20 direct hires from the Career Expo,” said Dr. Will Artis, non-appropriated funds support manager. “It was a very successful event that took a team effort by everybody in MWR to accomplish. We are pleased with the outcome.”
Melissa Padilla, recruiting assistant, U.S. Census Bureau, said the jobs her department is offering are perfect for students or for those who don’t have any previous work history.
“We have openings for enumerators, census field supervisors, and recruiting assistants,” Padilla said. “Applicants need to be 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and pass a background check. They don’t have to have a resume or previous experience. The jobs last from six to eight weeks and are close to home.”
Dylan Johnson was picking up information from the Census Bureau table. “I’m a student at Barstow College and I got word of mouth that this Job Fair was happening,” he said. “I think it’s a great idea to have all of these employers and schools in one place handing out information.”
“I believe the Career and Education Expo was a big success,” Kennedy said. “We will concentrate on getting the word out to the wider community to increase attendance the next time we put this on.”
