BROCKTON, Mass. – For Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Fuel) 1st Class Silvio Osorio, recruiting is as simple as "being yourself."
With an outgoing personality and engaging demeanor, it is easy to see why, in his first year, being himself has allowed him to excel in the art of recruiting.
Born in Managua, Nicaragua, in the late '80s and moving to Miami with his family at 4 months old, he grew up with strong family values and a self-determining spirt. At 17 years old, he was already planning a life of his own in the military. His mother first resisted, insisting he go straight to school, but his determination to join did not sway. His consent form was signed, and his new life to begin a career in America's naval warfare service branch was set in motion.
"The Navy has given me so much more knowledge of the world than I would have ever known staying at home," said Osorio. "Education, learning new cultures, and the people I've met, I could go on all day."
Osorio's first assignment found him attached to the San Diego based amphibious transport dock, USS Dubuque (LPD 8). Participating in international maritime exercises and daily ship life, helped him gain real-world experience.
"During my time at sea, I started learning things about myself that I didn't know, like just how capable I was to take control of my life," said Osorio. "I was where I needed to be."
His career also took him overseas to Naval Station Rota Spain before returning to sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vincent (CVN 70). Through various duty stations, one thing stood out about his character that foreshadowed his calling as a recruiter.
"Wherever I went, I was told by my chiefs that I was like the glue for everybody," said Osorio. “I am a social person and always try to get everybody unified wherever I am; it is just my personality."
Although switching to recruiting was a culture shock for Osorio, he was able to shrug it off without much thought.
"In life, you need to know how to adapt to any situation, especially for a recruiter," said Osorio. "You always have to adjust based on the situation you're in and what is going on around you."
October marks his one-year arrival to Navy Recruiting Command New England, with quality Sailor contracts leading the district. He earned three Navy Achievement Awards, was selected for recruiter of the month five times, and was nominated for Nuclear Recruiter for Region East at Navy Recruiting Command. For him, though, the accolades are second to the personal reward he gets by changing people’s lives.
"There is no off switch," said Osorio. "I sit down with them and say, you're going to have this feeling, you're going to have that feeling, and I remember because I was in their shoes. I can see their lives have improved. I believe they are more prepared now, and they understand it's normal to have some of these feelings when going through these experiences and life changes."
As a result, Osorio said many Sailors he has worked with have written or called him back to thank him for the confidence to get through those challenges.
Looking to the future in the New England district, Osorio keeps his sights geared toward continued growth.
"Everyone is trying to be number one in the nation, but I would just like to leave here as a chief or have a very good setup for advancement,” said Osorio. “To go as far as I can go in the Navy is my goal.”
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 17 Navy Recruiting Districts and nine Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,330 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America's Navy.
