MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE BARSTOW, CA, UNITED STATES

    09.26.2019

    Story by Keith Hayes

    Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow

Tyler W. Drake assumed the duties of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, Information Systems Security Officer on November 11, 2018.

A native of Bailey, Colorado, Drake graduated from Platte Canyon High School in 2005, and joined the enlisted ranks of the Marine Corps in August 2009.

While serving in the Marine Corps Drake had a tour of duty aboard Camp Albert E. Schwab, Okinawa, for two years, and extended for one year with Marine Air Ground Task Force Information Technology Support Center Western Pacific (MITSC WestPac) aboard Camp William A. Foster.

He reassigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for the remainder of his term with Headquarters Company, 5th Marine Regiment.

Drake transitioned to civilian life in August 2014.

As a civilian he worked at MITSC West as a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise contracted System Administrator and Cyber Security Specialist for two years.

Drake was subsequently accepted for a Civil Service position with the MITSC West team, and served as Assessment and Authorization lead and Vulnerability Management lead for another two years.

Drake is a recent graduate of Western Governor's University, earning his diploma in June 2018. He attained a Bachelor of Science in Network and System Administration, and picked up a few Information Technology certifications along the way.

During his time here at MCLB Barstow he has contributed significantly to the productivity and efficiency of the Cybersecurity program.

He largely works behind the scenes out of sight, but has made an impact that is impossible to miss. Vulnerability mitigation within the base network has been optimized, and cyber investigations have been completed thoroughly.

Using his technical ability in PowerShell scripting, Cybersecurity knowledge, and experience in Marine Corps information systems, Tyler has streamlined processes which have in turn strengthened the security posture of our networks.

Drake takes the initiative to solve issues or problems he sees through his prior service at Camp Pendleton to bring their successes here.

Some examples include organizing logical user directories, freeing up 65 percent of the base's shared drive used space in accordance with data retention policy, and providing guidance to those within the department on matters of Cybersecurity.
