The largest class in Officer Training School history graduated 745 commissioned officers in its “Godzilla” class on Sept. 26, 2019 with former Nomads among them Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
Among the graduates were 2nd Lt. Joshua Wixtrom, 2nd Lt. Kerry Kearschner, 2nd Lt. Robert Bryson and 2nd Lt. Calvin Ross who all worked at the 33rd Fighter Wing prior to heading to OTS.
“Lt. Kearschner is the first officer I have ever commissioned and getting that first chance to welcome somebody into the officer corps is a really neat experience,” said Col. Jon Wheeler, 33rd Fighter Wing commander.
Airmen made the drive from the 33rd FW to support their fellow Nomads.
“I can’t believe it,” said 2nd Lt. Kerry Kearschner, OTS graduate. “I’m overwhelmed with emotion with all the people who helped me get here and came out to support me.”
The graduates were all filled with emotion and for some it was a long awaited dream.
“It’s a great feeling,” said 2nd Lt. Joshua Wixtrom, OTS graduate. “It’s something I’ve been trying to do since I joined.”
Each graduate had their own journey, but all got there with the support of family, friends and wingmen.
“To be a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force is truly humbling,” said 2nd Lt. Robert Bryson, OTS graduate. “I applied a year ago and didn’t make it, but the second time I applied I was accepted and it’s truly an honor.”
Airmen who make the decision to apply to become an officer understand how difficult it can be, but putting in the hard work to reach that goal can pay dividends.
“It’s always great to see Airmen reach different milestones and to see these Airmen who have been so successful through their enlisted career that now have the opportunity to join the officer corps,” said Wheeler. “I’m proud of each and every one of them.”
