KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – When the Army-wide housing crisis hit earlier this year, emphasis was placed on family housing while single Soldier quarters, or barracks, sometimes seemed like an afterthought in the conversation.
But, old and stained mattresses, non-working or too small washing machines and dryers, and mold prevention were just a few of the topics brought up in the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Stakeholder meeting for facility managers Sept. 24 at Kleber Kaserne. The meeting was co-hosted by garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse, the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) and barracks facility managers from across the garrison.
The garrison wants to address barracks concerns openly and ensure those put in charge of their unit’s barracks understand the process and who to contact if something needs maintenance.
One of those barracks facility managers was recognized at the stakeholder meeting by Waterhouse as setting the standard and having her barracks in top shape.
Sgt. Sheniquia Hemmings, Clinical Operations Specialist with A Company at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, was presented a coin by Waterhouse in recognition of her efforts.
“It’s a thrill and honor to see one of our Soldiers in Alpha Company get highlighted,” said 1st Sgt. Arturo Garcia, A Company LRMC. “It’s great that Alpha Company is doing these great things for other barracks to see.”
Anni Smitherman, DPW Kaiserslautern Military Community-Site Division Housing Manager brought Hemmings to the attention of Waterhouse. She said Hemmings needed to be recognized because she is “what right looks like.”
“Fire extinguishers are all inspected, there’s a clean impression when you walk in her building, vacant rooms are ready for immediate move-in and all of the required files are up to date,” said Smitherman. “She provides Soldiers living in her barracks building with the best living, health and safety conditions possible.”
