Squadron Sailors Join Community in Coastal Cleanup Effort

Commander, Submarine Squadron 15

Inarajan, Guam (Sept. 21, 2019) – Sailors from Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen participated in the 25th annual International Coastal Cleanup event on Guam, Sept. 21.

More than 10 Sailors participated throughout the island in cleaning up beaches and surrounding areas. Sailors also joined community members from their sister village of Inarajan in cleaning the village’s beaches and natural swimming pools.

“It’s always touching to see all of these people come to our village to help sustain and beautify our beaches,” said Doris Lujan, the mayor of Inarajan. “The Sailors have always been a great help to our village during these events. Their work is always appreciated”

The Sailors in Inarajan collected more than twenty bags of trash and multiple large items including tires, tarps, and cement blocks.

The volunteers on Guam joined thousands across the globe to celebrate the importance of oceans and to spread awareness regarding the hazards our oceans face due to improper trash handling.

“It was a great experience being at the event helping beautify an already beautiful island,” said Chief Electricians Mate (Nuclear) Bryan Schmidt, a native of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania. “I enjoy having the opportunity to meet and work with locals who share the same passions of taking care of the environment and spending time outdoors.”

Sailors on the island routinely help local villages throughout the year as part of the Joint Region Marianas Sister Village, Sister Command community relations program. The purpose of the program is to create, foster, and develop sustained positive relationships between the military and the local Guam population.

CSS-15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Piti, Guam, and consists of four Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
