PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Sept. 18, 2019) – September is National Suicide Prevention month. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth hosted a Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Health Fair. The Health Promotion and Wellness Committee, in conjunction with the Suicide Prevention Program, handed out information pamphlets, business cards and other tools to communicate the importance of mental health and suicide prevention, Sep. 18.
“One of the strong beliefs surrounding mental health and suicide is that many times people can go through so much pain that they may feel like the only way to escape the pain is to end their lives,” said LCDR Jeremy Blythe, NMCP Chaplin. “That is why this suicide awareness fair is important because we want to be able to have resources for people who may suffer from overwhelming feelings.”
Several booths were set up and decorated with posters, art projects and candy as staff members from various departments spoke to passersby about suicide prevention. The fair focused on raising awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death.
“It is important to promote suicide awareness because we forget how isolated and desperate people feel at times,” said Jane Pellegrino, library services department head. “We as a community need to be able to reach out to individuals who need help and we also need to be able to know what signs to look for. The whole idea of suicide awareness is awareness for those who are struggling with depression and/or stress and for others around them so they will be alert to the warning signs.”
