WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo.-- A new commander took charge of the 442d Fighter Wing during September 15, 2019.

Although not new to the 442d FW, Col. Michael Schultz has joined Team Whiteman for the first time. From 2015 to 2017, Schultz commanded the 476th Fighter Group, a geographically separated unit assigned to the 442d FW.

Maj. Gen. Brian Borgen, 10th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony, in which Schultz, previously the 926th Wing commander, took responsibility of the wing from Brig. Gen. Roger Suro.

“You leave a place better than you found it—you embody that, Angry,” said Borgen about Col. “Angry” Schultz. “That’s why he’s here today. He’s the perfect guy to roll into this job.”

Schultz spent 14 years in the Regular Air Force until his transition to the Air Force Reserve in 2006. He is a command pilot with more the 2,800 hours and has flown combat missions in support of operations Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom.

“Lisa and I are excited to be here,” said Schultz. “It feels like coming home. I look forward to being apart of Team Whiteman.”

He described some of his priorities including his focus on organizational respect above personal gain.

“I try and live my life by the golden rule,” said Schultz. “If we can treat each other with dignity and respect and how we want to be treated that’s how we will get things done.”

“I have lost Airmen,” he continued. “I don’t want to lose anymore. I want you to be looking beside you, backwards and forwards around you. I don’t care if you’re a slick sleeve airman basic, I don’t care if you’re a general officer. We have to be continuously checking each other and making sure everyone is good to go- it could be as simple as a ‘good morning.’ It is the only way that any of this works. We truly are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.”
