FORT BENNING, Ga. — U.S. Army Forces Command’s Commanding General, Gen. Michael X. Garrett, emphasized the mastering of fundamentals as key while discussing FORSCOM’s priorities and sustained efforts in providing ready and globally responsive combat forces during the final day the 2019 Maneuver Warfighter Conference at the Maneuver Center of Excellence here Sept. 12.

Garrett has been the FORSCOM commander for just under six months.

“I’m really excited with the direction we’re going — winning matters, and we can win by mastering tasks from the bottom of our formations,” he said.

This year’s conference theme, “The Brigade Combat Team: Readying for Large Scale Combat Operations,” provided Garrett a platform to highlight FORSCOM’s focus on training and preparing brigade combat teams that are well led, disciplined and trained to win.

Readiness challenges and progress were also elaborated on. Challenges he described included building and maintaining readiness with limited resources, stress on the force and time management.

“We can improve in all this by clarifying what our priorities are, starting at the company, troop and battery level,” Garrett said.

As for progress, Garrett said training, equipment and personnel were right on track, although he said looking to the future, the force will need to learn the Army’s upcoming modernization goals.

“Our Army of 2028 must be a dominant, modernized Army,” he said. “We must all understand the upcoming modernization strategy.”

The Army Vision states: “The Army of 2028 will be ready to deploy, fight, and win decisively against any adversary, anytime and anywhere, in a joint, multi-domain, high-intensity conflict, while simultaneously deterring others and maintaining its ability to conduct irregular warfare. The Army will do this through the employment of modern manned and unmanned ground combat vehicles, aircraft, sustainment systems, and weapons, coupled with robust combined arms formations and tactics based on a modem warfighting doctrine and centered on exceptional leaders and Soldiers of unmatched lethality.”

The Army Modernization Strategy addresses the challenges of the future operational environment and directly supports the 2018 National Defense Strategy's line of effort, "Build a More Lethal Force." This strategy outlines the ends, ways and means for modernizing the U.S. Army to win future wars and is underpinned by advanced training and doctrine, according to Army Capability Integration Center.

“I believe we are on the right path to success, our past leadership has set that in motion,” Garrett said. Our Soldiers out there are getting after it. Leaders, time is our most precious resource, be clear about what the priorities are, and don’t forget about your NCOs. Our NCOs have no equal in the world.”

FORSCOM, the largest U.S. Army command, provides expeditionary, regionally engaged, campaign-capable land forces to combatant commanders. FORSCOM also trains and prepares a combat ready, globally responsive total force, building and sustaining readiness to meet Combatant Command requirements. Headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Forces Command consists of more than 750,000 Active Army, U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard Soldiers.
