Sustainment takes center stage at AMCOM town hall

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – “It is all about the Soldier in the field,” said Maj. Gen. Todd Royar, the AMCOM commander, as he kicked-off the AMCOM town hall meeting, Monday.

“Everything we do here at AMCOM is to enable the Soldier to do what he or she needs to do for the Nation,” said Royar. “They are the ones who keep us free; they are the ones who enable our way of life; and they are the ones who hold our values.”

The AMCOM workforce heard directly from the Commanding General regarding where and how to focus their efforts. The new AMCOM Campaign Plan, which will be published in the next couple of months, identifies three lines of effort – Sustainable and Materiel Readiness, Future Force and Human Capital.

“Our first priority is to ensure the units in the field have what they need today to ‘fight tonight’,” Royar said. “The second line of effort is future force. We want to integrate closely with the cross-functional teams to make sure we think about sustainment up front for any system [the Army] will procure so we will not be paying for it 30 years later.

“The last line of effort is what we owe you, what we owe ourselves… the human capital. We need to make sure that we are investing in your personal development. We want to help you be better rounded and better at what you do. We also have the responsibility to teach, grow and mentor those who will replace us. That is what good leaders do, and we have good leaders.”

The town hall also included an update from Col. Kelsey Smith, Redstone garrison commander, and recognitions for some AMCOM employees. The recognitions included length-of-service certificates and Army certificates of achievement as part of the AMCOM Most Valuable Player program. Sandra Lyles-Jackson and Cameron Broadus, both logistics management specialists, received acknowledgement as May and June MVPs, respectively. Ken Rose, a senior team lead for system safety, also received recognition for his selection as the 2019 Educator of the Year by the International System Safety Society.

Royar closed the town hall with a challenge to the workforce and an acknowledgement of all their hard work.

“I challenge you in a couple of ways,” said Royar. “If you have a good idea or a better way to do things, I want to hear it. If you are a supervisor, take the time to recognize the great work your people are doing. Also, take care of yourself. You are a valued-added member of the workforce and we cannot do it without you. Finally, I want to say thank you. Thank you for all that you do on a daily basis. It truly is important to the Warfighter in the field and you all do a phenomenal job. I could not be more proud of the work you do across AMCOM.”
