Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point Commanding Officer Col. Mikel Huber made a special visit to the Marine Corps Community Service Child Development Center (CDC) to congratulate its staff on the recent achievement of a five-year term accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Aug. 30, 2019.
The term of validation is valid until Sept. 1, 2024. The NAEYC is a membership organization that encourages early education at a proficient level from birth to the age of eight. The organization’s members share the vision of teaching children as early as possible to reach their full potential.
“When we are accredited at a national level, it tells me that we’ve exceeded standards and that is so important to us,” said Jodi Salamino, family care branch manager. “It is an opportunity for us to showcase the wonderful care that we provide for the Marines and families.”
The program earned an average score of 98.9 percent in 10 categories that assessed things such as curriculum, health, physical environment, relationships, teachers and teaching. The categories were graded based on their daily routines and unannounced quality-assurance visits.
“There was a lot of communication on the front end, a lot of team work, the ability to have our staff come to the table to problem-solve and deliberately set goals in order to make this achievement,” said Salamino.
The NAEYC has 7,000 accredited programs and approximately 60,000 individual members but only 10 percent of child care centers, preschools and kindergarten are acknowledged for this national achievement.
According to Huber, the CDC is essential to the lives of our service member’s children. They provide care for children so that our service members can serve our country without worry.
The CDC provides full time and hourly care for children of service members and DoD employees. Its staff implements a day filled with age appropriate activities that meets the Creative Curriculum for family child care. For more information: https://mccscherrypoint.com/children-youth.
