BOLTON, Vt., (September 5, 2019) – More than 30 Airmen assigned to the 158th Maintenance Group, Vermont Air National Guard from South Burlington, worked with the Green Mountain Club to build two tent platforms at the Long Trail South hiking pass throughout July, 2019.
The Airmen volunteered to hike the 3.2 mile trail each way to deliver more than 40 pieces of lumber to construct the tent platforms. Building the new platforms replaced two existing, aging platforms, used for overnight camping by hikers along the trail which leads to Camel’s Hump and beyond.
“The Green Mountain Club supports leaving little trace and making the outdoors a sustainable place that doesn’t get adversely impacted by all the uses of people,” said Lorne Currier, a field assistant and outreach coordinator for the Green Mountain Club.
The Airmen of the 158th focused on the Long Trail as it is the Green Mountain Club’s primary objective, which runs from Massachusetts to the Canadian border, passing through 270 miles of Vermont.
The Green Mountain Club said they have noticed more camping scattered about the trails, which led to the construction of tent platforms. They most importantly provide a durable base for hikers who intend to camp on the trails, the club added.
“It is very important for me to engage the community because I have kids at home and I’m trying to teach them how important it is to grow within a community, in a healthy environment,” said Senior Airman Carlos Cedeno, a low-observable technician assigned to the 158th Maintenance Squadron, 158th MXG. “I like to put a little back into the community where my kids are growing up.”
