A Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic team presented on the integration and testing of Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) for the U.S. Marine Corps at the 2019 Joint Navigation Conference (JNC) in Long Beach, California July 8-11, 2019.
The JNC planning committee selected Jake Witmer, NIWC Atlantic MGUE project lead for the Marine Corps, to update the defense community on NIWC Atlantic’s specific contributions in GPS modernization for the Marine’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).
“Briefing at JNC helps to reduce the learning curve for other platforms and government sites and provides them support, which is significant,” said Witmer.
The Military Division of the Institute of Navigation hosted the conference for the Department of Defense and Homeland Security. The theme of this year’s event was Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Technologies: The Foundation for Military Operations and Homeland Security.
“It’s an honor for our team to speak at conferences such as JNC,” said Pete Ward, Land Systems Integration (LSI) division head at NIWC Atlantic. “Anytime we can share progress or lessons learned across the DOD enterprise is extremely valuable and serves as a force multiplier for our nation’s defense.”
The LSI Division at NIWC Atlantic started integration work with MGUE in 2015 as part of an ongoing effort for the U.S. Air Force to modernize GPS for space, ground control systems and receiver cards used by ships, aircraft, vehicles and other applications.
“The receiver card modernization, referred to as MGUE, is a joint service effort conducted in different increments to address GPS malfunctions and improve resistance to current cybersecurity challenges,” said Witmer.
Each military branch nominated a platform for receiver card modernization. When the Joint Program Office for the JLTV Marine Corps requested a government systems integration laboratory to validate Marine GPS integration, NIWC Atlantic took the lead on the project.
“The knowledge we’ve gained from the Joint Navigation Warfare Center and the information we’ve learned on classifying threats are areas we can provide value to the warfighter,” said Witmer.
The team’s presentation at JNC was one of multiple briefings provided by and for the defense community to update and educate participants on advances in battlefield applications in GPS, warfighter PNT solutions and navigation warfare.
“Technology integration, like our efforts presented at this year’s JNC, ensure the systems we work on are modernized, refreshed and capable of maintaining pace with the latest in cybersecurity,” said Ward.
As a part of Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, NIWC Atlantic provides systems engineering and acquisition to deliver information warfare capabilities to the naval, joint and national warfighter through the acquisition, development, integration, production, test, deployment, and sustainment of interoperable command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, cyber and information technology capabilities.
